Using the Rule of Third or Guides to make your webtoon panels can help balance and keep your comic panels from looking crowded or imbalanced~
Some people have a natural eye to finding the balance in placing their webtoon panels but I am not such a person.
I struggle trying to visualize where a webtoon panel should go and it ends up triggering my artist block because I’m frustrated and no longer enjoying the webtoon creating process; but never fear because there is a solution!
Use the golden rule of thirds! Here is a mini tiktok video of me showing you how I use it!
@smorishita I’m so sorry for stumbling over my words😭 but I wanted to share this webtoon tip❤##fridaythe13th ##lifeathome ##webtoon

I totally recommend you check out FRANK SANTORO throughly detailed blog post that goes more in-depth about the golden rule and the study he did with applying it to comic panel pages.
How do you make a webtoon panel?
My process in making a webtoon panel is first selecting a webtoon drawing app and starting a new file.
Line Webtoon file size format is 800 x 1260 but I usually create my file size twice or even three times that size so that I can avoid the dread blur.
So my working webtoon files are usually 1600 x 4800 and I just draw 1-2 panels per file.
There are others that do the long form webtoon format where all of their panels are all one one long file.
I wrote more about webtoon panel style here in the post How to start a comic Webtoon Vertical Panels
So after I figure out which format I want to do either long form or short form I now go in and add a new layer for my guide template.
I wouldn’t have been able to make this guide if it wasn’t for the template that Making Comics created so you should totally check them out too!.
Then I start to draw my rectangle panel boxes. I typically like to have one or more of the four corners or one of the four sides touching one of the intersecting points.
Since I’m terrible with my words I’ll go ahead and insert pictures below of what I mean:
What size is a webtoon panel?
This is another reason why I love using this webtoon panel guide template because I’m able to size my panels without the fear of the webtoon page looking unbalanced.
So webtoon panels can be long or short, any size. I personally like using the guide to help me keep things balanced.
Also as long as your final uploading file is 800 x 1260 then you shouldn’t have any problem uploading onto webtoon.
I go in to more detail on webtoon file size format if you’d like a deeper explanation of that or feel free to drop a question below and I can always make another post to expound more on that.
How many panels does a webtoon have?
If you’re uploading on LINE Webtoon I’ve done some research and I found that they sometimes recommend 35 panels but there are others that do as low as 5 panels.
I personally stick to 20 panels at the moment because that’s an enjoyable about of webtoon panel work to do throughout the week. So that means I usually draw just 1 or 2 webtoon panels per webtoon page file.
So I’d say that use however many or few panels you feel your story needs to get it’s point across.
I like to use the guide to help me balance out how much or how little panels.
Different spacing gives different feels like for quick high action the spacing between panels sometimes is smaller and to show a passage of time or to slow things down the space is increased.
What should you do next?
