Breaking down the Webtoon Format

Breaking down the Webtoon Format

A webtoon page format is different then the traditional comic page format because instead of the panels being left to right they are placed top to bottom.

Having the webtoon panels format stacked on top of each others makes it easier for viewing on mobile devices since we usually swipe up when scrolling on our phones.

How Many Panels Can you Draw in a Webtoon to Keep Them Readable?

My webtoon episode are usually 20 panels each but there are other webtoon artist or creators that have double or triple that amount.

If you want to publish your webtoon onto LINE webtoons platform then your files need to be 800 x 1280.

The issues I’ve had in the past was trying to figure out how many panels to place on each file while still keeping the webtoon page readable and not going over the 20MB upload limit.

I could get away with uploading 20 panels individually because it’s usually 5MB total but that can change real quick if you have more panels and uploading 60+ panels individually becomes a pain.

So what I do is I stick to either 1-2 panels per webtoon file upload. This way my panels aren’t too small and I can make sure I keep the total episode file under 20MB and have cut my upload file amount in half.

There are a few different ways to go about adding more panels to your webtoon page file but this is what I usually stick it.

Do you make 1 long page or do you put multiple pages together?

You can actually do both but you need to make sure your your webtoon upload page is no bigger than 800 x 1280.

What some people do is create their webtoon panels all on 1 long file so their working file might be 800 x 20000.

Of course that’s way to long for it to be uploaded on webtoon so after they export/save it from their drawing program they either slice it or crop it manually or there is an option to use an online slicers that will crop your 1 page webtoon into individual files for you to upload on to LINE webtoon.

Here is a tiktok video on how I usually go about cropping and publishing my webtoon files. I usually do multiple individual panel images and upload them that way.

If you’re having trouble laying the composition of your webtoon page then you might find using the rule of 3rd useful. It’s what I use to help format my webtoon panels.
