Choosing Your Webtoon Comic Fonts

Choosing Your Webtoon Comic Fonts

Using san-serif fonts like Wild Word Roman fonts are great for webtoon comic fonts because they’re very legible on different sized screens and formats~

Here are a list of a few of the fonts that is typically used for webtoon speech balloons and fonts you can also use for your webtoon.

I’ve attached links to the sites that I’ve used before and feel comfortable safely sharing those sites but there are other sites that you can download the fonts that I haven’t linked I just am not fully sure of how safe they are. So please download at your own risk.

I definitely recommend you check out Shibal Inu Webtoon Font blog post where they go more in-depth about the How to’s of typesetting of the webtoon fonts!

What would be a good font for webtoon speech bubbles?

A nice rule of thumb when searching through all of the different font styles is to use handwritten font styles for speech balloons.

There a lot easier to read then more detailed high energy or emotional font styles. With dialogue ballon the goal that I try to stick to is making it as readable as possible.

Now I do like to use the more high energy jagged or curly fonts if I want to add a little bit of personality or emotions for sound effects but usually for speech balloons I want the focus to be on what’s being said not the personality of the font and emotions the style of font gives.

Where can you Download webtoon fonts?

There are a lot of places where you can download fonts to use for your webtoon or comic but I’ll just list a few of them so that I don’t overwhelm you all~

  • Blambot: Is the place where an aspiring comic creator can get affordable fonts.
  • The Fonts.com™: store from Monotype offers more than 150,000 desktop and Web font products for you to preview, purchase and download.
  • Dafont: This site is one of my favorite sites that I’ve used for many years because of their licenses search ability and you’re also able to test out what different fonts look like with different lines of dialogue.
  • 1001 Free Fonts: Is another font site that has been around for a while and they also have a large library of fonts that you can use for your webtoon comic.
  • Google Font: Sometimes people can me a little leary of downloading from 3rd party sites like the ones I listed above so I feel google font is a great place to download your webtoon fonts.

What Fonts do I use for my Webtoon?

The comic fonts that I like to use the most for the dialogue balloons for my webtoon are the Wild Words Roman font, augie font and felt regular font.

I mostly use Wild word roman for all regular speech/narration dialogue and then I use the augie or the felt regular for any dialogue that’s more of a side add on to the word ballon or special note for the readers to take notice.

Also another good rule of thumb is that you the default fonts found within the art program that you’re using is more than adequate enough. I even handwrite my dialogue if the mood in the story calls for it.

Do you have any webtoon fonts styles that are your favorite? What sites do you like to download your comic fonts from?

5 Thoughts on Choosing Your Webtoon Comic Fonts

  1. on blambot, it says that their fonts are free to use for indie comic creator, but idk if webtoon is considered “indie” since its pretty popular. It also says you have to pay if it’s being published by a mainstream company and i think webtoon is kinda mainstream for digital comic? idk if they’re actually okay to use or if im overthinking.

  2. Are these fonts free to use to put in webtoon? I don’t wanna get sued, although i doubt that will happen but just in case y’know?

    • I believe so, I’ve tried to make sure I linked to fonts from sites that have the license information available to help avoid any conflict with licensing☺❤ I hope this helps and thank you so much for asking!

  3. I downloaded the fonts and am trying to download more but its not showing up in my clip studio.. what process did you go through to get those fonts?

    • What worked for me was that I would install the font on my computer after downloading it then I would close out of clip studio paint and when I open it back up it usually will appear in the font area☺ I hope that will work for you❤
