Creating Webtoon Backgrounds: Tips and Tricks

Hey guys! So today we’re talking about a way on how you can make some pretty nifty webtoon backgrounds. One way I like to do it is by using 3D models from a website called ACON3D.

They have a ton of different options and they even have this new feature called ABLR that allows you to edit the 3D models without needing to use SketchUp. Plus, it’s currently free to use on Windows computers and it should be coming to Macs soon too!

I personally love using 3D backgrounds in Clip Studio Paint because it comes with default camera angle presets which makes it super easy to create backgrounds for my webtoons, webcomics, and traditional manga style comics.

It saves me a ton of time that I would have spent trying to map out the camera angle and perspective. Plus, there’s this really cool LT conversion function that lets me extract or export the black and white lineart of the 3D background, which is great for my traditional black and white manga style comics.

One other thing I like to do when creating backgrounds for my webtoon is to adjust the color balance. It helps to take away that 3D coloring effect that can sometimes clash with my webtoon comics.

If you have any questions about my process, feel free to ask in the comments and I’d be happy to chat more about it. And if you want to see my process first-hand, check out my YouTube channel, S-Morishita Studio, where I have a video showing how I create my backgrounds.

And if you’re interested in starting your own webtoon but don’t know where to begin, I highly recommend checking out the “How to Start a Webtoon” ebook. It covers everything you need to know about what hardware and tools webtoon artists use, as well as a full breakdown of the webtoon process.

And if you’re looking for a great webtoon recommendation to pass the time, I recommend giving “Catch Me! Fight Me! Love Me!” a try. It’s a fake marriage trope, interracial romance webtoon with a strong female lead.
