A lot of aspiring webtoon creators ask me, “Can you publish a webtoon on mobile?” The answer is yes, you totally can! Here’s a quick video of my process on how I publish on Webtoon using a Samsung smartphone or standalone tablet:
Getting started as a Webtoon creator is super exciting, but let me tell you—it’s not uncommon to hit a few roadblocks when you’re just figuring things out. Don’t worry, though! I’ve been there, and I’m here to help guide you through some of the most common struggles so you can focus on creating your amazing webtoon.
Where Is Webtoon’s Publish Button?!
Let’s talk about the confusion around finding the publish button on the Webtoon platform. If you’ve been hunting for it in the Webtoon app and it’s nowhere to be found, you’re not alone—I made this mistake when I first started, too!
Why the publish button on webtoon missing?
Here’s the deal: the Webtoon app is just for reading comics, not for uploading them. If you want to publish your episodes, you need to use an internet browser. But there’s a catch: when you open Webtoon’s website on your phone, it defaults to the mobile version, and guess what? No publish button there either!
How to Find webtoon’s publish button
You have to switch to the desktop version of Webtoon’s website on your phone or tablet. Most browsers, like Chrome or Safari, let you do this by selecting “View Desktop Site” in the menu. Trust me, once you make the switch, that elusive publish button will appear. And the best part? You don’t even need a computer—your phone or tablet works perfectly fine!
Uploading Your Webtoon on a Mobile Phone
To upload my webtoon through my mobile device, I open an internet browser (like Chrome or Internet Explorer) to access LINE Webtoon’s website instead of using the Webtoon reading app. Here’s how you can do it too:
- Use the Desktop View: On your mobile device, switch to the desktop view of your browser. This setting can typically be found in your browser menu.
- On an Android phone, for example, you’ll see the choice at the bottom corner of the settings menu.
- Log Into Your Webtoon Account: You’ll need your email ID and password to access your profile page.
- Navigate to Your Profile Page: Once logged in, you’ll find options to upload your own comics on your Webtoon Canvas account.
Preparing Your Webtoon for Upload & Publishing
Here are some key tips and steps to guarantee a smooth upload:
1. File Sizes and Formats
- Canvas Size: Stick to the recommended canvas size for Webtoon—usually 800px wide with a longer canvas height to allow for scrolling.
- File Size of My Thumbnail: Make sure your series thumbnail is under 500KB.
- Upload Limit: Each episode can include up to 20MB of images, so enhance your file sizes!
2. Frame Borders and Gutter Space
- You can use a clean frame border to keep your panels organized and have them fill the whole page like one seamless panel or you can have the frame borders like a typical traditional comic page. There are no rules in my opinion.
- Leave gutter space between panels to help the story flow smoothly in the webtoon format.
3. Webtoon Creator Drawing Applications and Tools
- Webtoon drawing sofrware like Clip Studio Paint, Medibang Paint, and others are a favorite amoung webtoon original artist who post in the webtoon canva section because of the comic specific tools they have like the free background assets and the frame boarder layer creation too which is perfect for creating webtoon episodes.
- Use vector layers for precise line work, effect lines for dramatic moments, and clip studio assets to save time.
- A graphics tablet can make drawing easier, even when you’re working on mobile.
Canvas Size and Webtoon File Formatting Tricks
If you’re anything like me, you might’ve been a little confused about how to format your episodes at first. Webtoon’s vertical format is pretty different from traditional comics, so it’s totally normal to feel a little lost here.
Here’s What Works for Me
- Canvas Size: I like to stick to drawing in a canvas’s size that is double the uploading size because I can add about 2 panels per page without it looking crammed— 1600px wide and up to 4600px tall per panel. I break my webtoon up into pages instead of one long strip because that is just my personal preference.
- Tools That Help: Drawing apps like Clip Studio Paint, ibispain or Medibang Paint are lifesavers. They even have templates specifically designed for Webtoon’s format, so you don’t have to guess.
Publishing Your Webtoon
When your webtoon is ready, here’s how to upload it:
- Access Your webtoon Profile Page within the internet browser on your mobile device by going to their website (www.webtoon.com), do not use the webtoon app
From your dashboard, navigate to your series and click the Publish Button. - Add Episode Details
- Upload your completed canvas episodes in the correct order.
- Add your creator’s note and make sure your speech bubbles are clear and easy to read.
- Update your profile picture and social media account links to attract new audiences.
- Content Rating Assignment
Before publishing, finish the content rating survey for your episode. This step helps assign a suitable rating for your audience. If you’re worried about getting it right, follow this basic outline:- Be honest about the content (violence, language, etc.) in your episodes.
- If your webtoon is rated as “Mature” but you want to reach a broader audience, adjust sensitive scenes to meet the “Teen” or “Young Adult” criteria.
Extra Tips from Published Webtoon Authors
Here are some beginner friendly tips that a few of my webcomic peers have shared with me, some of them I follow and some I don’t but maybe these may be helpful to you, just take them with a grain of salt because webcomic creation isn’t a one size fits all:
- Basic Tutorials: Explore basic tutorials for working with drawing applications or tools like Clip Studio Paint. Don’t beat yourself up if it feels like it takes a lot of time to create your webtoon because there is no set time that you need to do when it comes to making the story you love (unless you are contractually obligated but I’m speaking to those who are new and just doing this with no signed contract~)
- Strong Foundation: Build a strong foundation with simple storytelling techniques. A comprehensive guide on webtoon creation can help!
- Ad Revenue Potential: Monetize your work through ad revenue once your series gains traction.
- User Postings: Engage with readers and promote your work through user postings and comments.
If you’ve been scratching your head wondering, “Why won’t my thumbnail upload?” or “Where did my canvas episodes go?” you’re not alone! These are super common questions.
- Thumbnail Size: Make sure your thumbnail is 436px by 436px. Anything outside that won’t upload properly.
- Creator’s Notes: Don’t forget to add a little message at the end of your episode. It’s a great way to connect with readers and let them know more about you or your process.
When I first started, I was so worried that I didn’t have the right tools. If you’re feeling the same, let me reassure you—you don’t need a fancy setup to get started.
- Publishing Without a Computer: As long as you’ve got an internet browser on your phone or tablet, you can access the desktop version of Webtoon and publish your episodes. I do this all the time, and it works great!
- Affordable Tools: You don’t need to spend a ton of money. A simple graphics tablet like a Huion or an iPad with a stylus can go a long way. Apps like Clip Studio Paint work beautifully for creating your episodes.
