I use display or graphic drawing tablets which are sort of like a blend between a pen and mouse pad along with Clip Studio Paint to draw my webtoons on my computer~
If you are a beginner comic artist or maybe just looking to try out drawing comic books on the computer then the bare basics of what you would need to draw a comic on the computer is a graphic tablet and an art program!
Beginner Friendly Graphic Tablet
Wacom Bamboo was my very first graphic tablet that I used back when I first started drawing my comic on the computer…..well it was more so my laptop but same difference~
Wacom has rebranded their Bamboo tablet and now calls it their intuos tablet but there are a lot of other very inexpensive and high quality tablets on the market now. (Which is great because back in 2007 there was slim pickings!)
Just to be clear you don’t really need a graphic tablet. If you have a phone and a pen stylus then you can actually start drawing digitally that way too!
Beginner Friendly Comic Art Program
Now the art program that I first used when I started getting into drawing my comics digitally was Manga Studio.
They now go by the name of Clip Studio Paint and it took me a while to get used to drawing with their program because everything looked so overwhelming and foreign.
I don’t necessarily suggest beginner or hobby aspiring comic artist to buy this program when they’re first starting out just because of the steep learning curve and cost.
The art program that I would recommend that has a nice simplistic design that isn’t too over whelming would be Medibang Paint!
I specifically use their mobile art app and that’s the one I’d recommend the most for those starting out with drawing digitally!
Not only is it user friendly and a light weight program (which means you don’t have to worry about your computer fan screaming at you cause it’s overheating) but it’s FREE!
There are of course lots of other art apps that you can use and if you’d like you can read my other blog post where I cover a few of them here~
What should you do next?
