Webtoon Canvas Secrets: Achieve Crisp Lines & Maintain Quality

Hey there, aspiring webtoon creators! Have you ever drawn a stunning piece for your webtoon, only to be disappointed by pixelated lines when uploading it? It’s a common problem that happens for beginners so don’t worry.

While Webtoon recommends a canvas size of 800x1200px, which is great for mobile reading. This doesn’t mean that we have to actually draw in that canvas size.

Working at this size can make it tricky to achieve those smooth, high-quality details you crave.

Many professional webtoon artists use a special technique to create stunning artwork without sacrificing quality. Basically, they will draw on a larger canvas size.

When they export their file, they can choose to save it smaller. This allows for easy upload onto different webcomic platforms.

Why Work in a Bigger Canvas size?

Imagine having more space to draw those intricate details and create super-clean lines. That’s the magic of working on a larger canvas! It lets you focus on your artwork without worrying about pixelation popping up later.

The Downscaling Secret

Here’s the key. We’ll create a large, high-resolution canvas file. Then, we will “shrink” it down to the recommended Webtoon size during export. This way, your artwork retains its beautiful crispness despite being displayed at a smaller size.

Another thing to note is that a lot of the popular free webcomic publishing platforms now will allow you to upload your files as is. Many platforms will resize and slice them for you.

3 Simple Steps on How to Make a Webtoon Canvas in Clip Studio Paint:

1. Create a Large Canvas: When setting up a new file in Clip Studio Paint, go beyond the 800x1200px recommendation. Let’s try a width of 4600px. For the height, choose a value that’s a multiple of 1280px. 1280px is Webtoon Canva’s standard height for one “page” on their platform.

• Downscale During Export: Now, after you’ve finished your page, it’s time to export it for Webtoon. Look for the “Webtoon Export” menu in Clip Studio Paint. If you’re not using Clip Studio Paint, then you should look for the Export button under Files, etc.

• Specify Output Size: In the export window, there will be options to adjust the output size. Look for “Specify Output Size” and type in 800px for the width. This tells Clip Studio Paint to shrink your entire artwork down to the Webtoon standard size. But don’t worry. Using the export instead of save allows your original file to still stay its large size. When you use export, this lets you create a smaller version of your file. It is separately created and ready to be uploaded online.

Bonus Tip: Webtoon Mobile Preview Feature:

Clip Studio Paint also has a cool smartphone previews feature. This lets you see how your webtoon canva size will appear on a mobile screen while you’re drawing. This way, you can improve your panel placement and make sure everything looks perfect once uploaded.

By working on a larger canvas, you can unlock amazing detail and crisp lines for your webtoons. Downscaling with the Export choice enhances this effect. Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach!
